Majestic Kenya Safaris

12-Day Kenya Safari & Diani Beach

Starts from

£1,900 pp

Overview

This itinerary runs west to east and finishes at the coast. The Masai Mara first, then Naivasha, Amboseli, Tsavo East and Diani. Tsavo sits on the Mombasa road, so the coastal leg follows naturally rather than doubling back.

Nine days of safari followed by three at the beach. The order is deliberate. Finishing with early starts and long drives sends people home tired. Finishing on the Indian Ocean does not.

Accommodations:

  • Mara Chui Resort (Masai Mara)
  • Kongoni Lodge (Lake Naivasha)
  • AA Lodge Amboseli (Amboseli)
  • Ngutuni Safari Lodge (Tsavo East)
  • Diani Sea Lodge (Diani Beach)

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve

    Driving Time: 5-6 hours

    Meals: Lunch & Dinner

You leave Nairobi heading west, climb to the escarpment and descend into the valley. There is a viewpoint on the way down that is worth the stop. The road then runs through Narok to the reserve.

You have lunch at Mara Chui and go out for the afternoon. First drives tend to be about numbers rather than rarities, with zebra, wildebeest, topi, giraffe and impala across the plains, and lion somewhere among them.

Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Chui Resort.

  • Day 2: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

You go out at first light. Predators are still moving and the light is better for photography. Lion are the most straightforward to find. Cheetah need open ground and clear sight lines. Leopard require patience and a guide who knows the trees they use.

You break through the middle of the day and go out again around four. Hyena become active in the late afternoon and clans of twenty or more are common here.

Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Chui Resort.

  • Day 3: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

A full day out with a packed lunch is worth considering. It opens up the western side and the Mara River, where hippo occupy the pools and crocodile lie on the sandbanks.

From July the wildebeest are present and crossings become possible. Herds build on the bank, sometimes for hours, then cross all at once. It cannot be scheduled. Balloon flights and village visits both need booking in advance.

Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Chui Resort.

  • Day 4: Masai Mara to Lake Naivasha

    Driving Time: 4-5 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

You take a morning drive, have breakfast, then head northeast out of Maasai country and back up into the valley. You reach Kongoni Lodge by lunch.

Naivasha is freshwater with no large predators, which changes what is possible. You can take a boat among the hippo and fish eagles. Crescent Island can be walked on foot, with zebra and giraffe a short distance away. It makes a useful break after three days of vehicle-based game viewing.

Dinner and overnight stay at Kongoni Lodge.

  • Day 5: Lake Naivasha to Amboseli National Park

    Driving Time: 5-6 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

You travel south out of the valley, around Nairobi, then onto the Namanga road. The country becomes steadily drier and by the time you turn off for the park it is thorn and dust.

Kilimanjaro is usually behind cloud in the afternoon but often clears again around sunset. There is time for a short drive before dark to find the elephants, which is what Amboseli is known for.

Dinner and overnight stay at AA Lodge Amboseli.

  • Day 6: Full Day in Amboseli National Park

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

You want to be out before six because of the mountain. Kilimanjaro is clear overnight and usually stays visible until around nine, so the early start matters if you want to photograph it.

Observation Hill gives a view across the swamps, and the swamp margins hold buffalo, hippo and a good range of water birds. Amboseli's elephants have been studied since 1972, the longest running study of wild elephants anywhere, and every animal in the population is individually identified and recorded.

Dinner and overnight stay at AA Lodge Amboseli.

  • Day 7: Amboseli to Tsavo East National Park

    Driving Time: 4-5 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

You head east through Emali and onto the Mombasa highway. Ngutuni borders Tsavo East and has its own waterhole in front of the lodge, which is busy for most of the day.

The afternoon goes into the park. These are the same species you saw in Amboseli but coated in red laterite dust, which is where the name comes from. Lion are common and easier to see here than in the thicker bush of Tsavo West.

Dinner and overnight stay at Ngutuni Safari Lodge.

  • Day 8: Full Day in Tsavo East National Park

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

The morning goes to the Galana River. Permanent water in a dry park draws most species eventually, and there is usually something on the approaches.

Lugard Falls is worth stopping for, with rock the river has cut into smooth channels and bowls. The afternoon covers the Aruba plains for gerenuk and ostrich, and cheetah are sometimes seen on the open ground.

Dinner and overnight stay at Ngutuni Safari Lodge.

  • Day 9: Tsavo East to Diani Beach

    Driving Time: 4-5 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

You drive out through the park, then head southeast on the Mombasa road. The air changes about an hour out, becoming humid, and the vegetation turns green after several days of red dust.

You cross on the Likoni ferry to the south coast and continue to Diani. Everyone leaves the vehicle for the crossing. You should reach the lodge by mid to late afternoon.

Dinner and overnight stay at Diani Sea Lodge.

  • Day 10: Full Day at Diani Beach

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Nothing is scheduled today. Diani has around seventeen kilometres of white sand with a reef offshore, so swimming and snorkelling are the obvious options.

Shimba Hills is an hour inland if you want more wildlife, and holds sable antelope, which occur nowhere else in Kenya. There is also the option of a dhow trip along the coast.

Dinner and overnight stay at Diani Sea Lodge.

  • Day 11: Full Day at Diani Beach

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

A second free day. Kisite Marine Park south of Diani has better snorkelling if you are interested, with dolphins seen fairly regularly. It takes a full day by boat.

Diving, kitesurfing and deep sea fishing all operate out of Diani through operators on the beach. A spare day before a long flight is not wasted either way.

Dinner and overnight stay at Diani Sea Lodge.

  • Day 12: Diani Beach to Nairobi

Flight: Diani to Wilson Airport, Nairobi

    Meals: Breakfast

After breakfast there is a short transfer to Ukunda airstrip. The flight to Wilson takes about an hour and saves eight on the road.

You arrive in Nairobi mid-morning and transfer across to Jomo Kenyatta for international connections. There is enough margin in this for an afternoon departure.
