This runs through the Rift Valley before turning west for the Mara, so you are heading in one direction the whole way. Nothing over five hours in the vehicle and the first leg is only three, which makes for a gentle first day if people are arriving jet-lagged.
Two nights at Nakuru rather than the usual one. Then Naivasha, where the lake has no predators in it, so you can get out on a boat and walk on Crescent Island among zebra and giraffe. Three nights in the Mara to finish.
Accommodations:
Driving Time: 3 hours
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
A civilised departure time for once, mid-morning is fine. The road climbs northwest out of the city and reaches the escarpment where the valley drops away below with Longonot and Suswa visible across it.
Into the park before lunch. Lake Nakuru Lodge is inside the boundary so game viewing starts on the drive in. Afternoon out looking for rhino, which is what the park is known for. Both species are here and the white rhino in particular are easy to find on the open grassland.
Dinner and overnight stay at Lake Nakuru Lodge.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Black rhino are the harder of the two. They are solitary, bad-tempered, and stick to thick bush, so finding one takes a guide who knows their territories. Early morning is the best window before they settle up for the day.
The park changes character as you move east away from the lake, up through acacia woodland into euphorbia forest and rocky cliff country. Baboon Cliff gives you the whole basin in one view. Rothschild's giraffe are everywhere and there are lion, though they take some finding in the wooded sections.
Dinner and overnight stay at Lake Nakuru Lodge.
Driving Time: 1.5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Short hop down the valley floor after a morning drive. You are at Kongoni Lodge by lunch with the whole afternoon spare, which most people appreciate at this point in a trip.
Naivasha is freshwater and there are no big predators, which changes what you can do. Boat out among the hippo and the fish eagles. Crescent Island is a peninsula rather than an island most years and you can walk it on foot with zebra, wildebeest, waterbuck, and giraffe grazing around you.
Dinner and overnight stay at Kongoni Lodge.
Driving Time: 4-5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Southwest along the valley, then up over the Mau and down the other side into Maasai country. The farmland thins out and the grassland opens up over the last hour.
Camp by mid-afternoon with time for a drive before dark. The scale of the Mara takes a moment to register after a week of smaller parks. Herds spread out to the horizon in every direction.
Dinner and overnight stay at AA Lodge Masai Mara.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Full day, two drives. The morning is when the predators are still moving, so that is when you go looking for lion and cheetah. Hyena are also active early and worth watching, they are far more interesting animals than their reputation suggests.
Birding here is excellent if anyone in the group is keen. Secretary birds stalking through the grass, ground hornbill, five or six eagle species, and the whole range of vultures at any kill. Afternoon drive after the heat drops off.
Dinner and overnight stay at AA Lodge Masai Mara.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Take a packed lunch and stay out if the group is up for it. That gets you further into the reserve than a morning drive allows and you can sit with a sighting rather than watching the clock.
Balloon flights need booking ahead and go up at first light. Village visits run in the afternoon. Otherwise the last evening drive is a chance to go back to wherever produced the best sighting earlier in the week.
Dinner and overnight stay at AA Lodge Masai Mara.
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
One more drive at first light, then breakfast and the road east. Narok, up the escarpment, and into Nairobi.
Arrival mid to late afternoon depending on the traffic coming in. Hotel or airport as needed.
