Amboseli and Tsavo East sit close enough together that you can do both without a punishing transfer between them. Amboseli is small, open, and full of elephant, with Kilimanjaro filling the southern horizon on a clear morning. Tsavo East is the opposite: vast, thinly visited, and red with dust.
Because Tsavo East sits on the Mombasa road, this trip also works as a lead-in to a beach stay. Finishing at Voi rather than driving back to Nairobi puts you two hours from Diani. Say the word and we will price it that way.
Accommodations:
Driving Time: 4-5 hours
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
South out of Nairobi on the Namanga road. The country turns dry and flat once you are past Kajiado, all thorn scrub and dust devils. Kilimanjaro shows up ahead if the cloud has not built yet, usually before ten in the morning.
Lunch at the lodge, then out mid-afternoon. Amboseli's elephant come down to the swamps to feed and you can sit and watch a family group for an hour without them paying you any attention. Wet mud, flapping ears, calves shoving each other around.
Dinner and overnight stay at AA Lodge Amboseli.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Up before six for the mountain. Kilimanjaro clears overnight and stays visible until the cloud builds around nine, so that window is your one chance at the photograph everyone wants. Get out early or you miss it.
Observation Hill is the only place in the park you can leave the vehicle. Ten minutes up the steps and you can see the whole swamp system spread out below. Afternoon drives work the swamp margins where buffalo, waterbuck, and enormous flocks of pelican and crowned crane gather.
Dinner and overnight stay at AA Lodge Amboseli.
Driving Time: 4-5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
East through Emali and onto the Mombasa road. The scenery is nothing special on this leg but it passes quickly enough. You enter Tsavo East and the difference from Amboseli is immediate, thicker bush, redder ground, far fewer vehicles.
Voi Wildlife Lodge overlooks a waterhole that stays busy. The afternoon drive follows the Voi River. Tsavo elephant coat themselves in the laterite soil until they are properly rust-coloured, which is where the red elephant reputation comes from.
Dinner and overnight stay at Voi Wildlife Lodge.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
North to the Galana River for the morning. Permanent water in a dry park means everything comes here eventually. Crocodile on the banks, hippo in the deeper pools, and lion working the approaches.
Lugard Falls is not much of a waterfall but the rock is remarkable, water-carved into smooth channels and bowls over thousands of years. Afternoon on the Aruba plains where you get gerenuk standing on their hind legs to browse and, if you are lucky, cheetah on the open ground.
Dinner and overnight stay at Voi Wildlife Lodge.
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Game drive on the way to the gate, which usually turns up something since the animals are moving in the cool of the morning. Then onto the Mombasa road and northwest.
Lunch stop en route. Nairobi by mid to late afternoon depending on how bad the traffic is coming into the city. Drop off at your hotel or the airport.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Second full day. Your guide adjusts the plan based on what you want to see more of. Option for a full-day drive with picnic lunch for maximum time out in the reserve. Optional dawn hot air balloon flight over the plains if booked in advance. The afternoon continues with game viewing as the day cools.
Optional Maasai village visit in the afternoon gives context to the communities living alongside the wildlife. The last evening drive wraps up your time in the Mara before heading back to Nairobi tomorrow.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Maisha Camp.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Third full day in the Mara. Three nights in one camp lets you slow down and build on what you've seen over previous days. Your guide tracks specific animals across multiple outings. Morning drives remain consistently rewarding throughout the stay. The Mara rewards patience and time.
A good day to revisit favourite spots or push into areas you haven't explored yet. The Mara Triangle on the western side of the reserve is worth a full morning if you haven't been. Last evening drive before the journey home tomorrow.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Maisha Camp.
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Final morning game drive before breakfast, then check out and drive back to Nairobi. Arrive by mid to late afternoon. Drop off at your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for evening departures.
