Three days is the shortest trip worth doing in the Mara. You get an afternoon drive on arrival, a full day out on day two, and one more morning before the drive home. Anything shorter and you spend more time on the road than in the reserve.
Jambo Masai Mara Camp sits near Talek gate. That matters more than it sounds. Camps further out add forty minutes each way to every drive, which eats into your time in the reserve. The tents have proper beds and en-suite bathrooms. Nothing fancy, but clean and comfortable.
Accommodation:
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
An early start out of Nairobi on the road west. You climb to the escarpment, stop at the viewpoint where the whole Rift Valley opens up below, then drop down and carry on through Narok. The last stretch after Narok is where the farmland gives way to grazing land and you start seeing Maasai herders with cattle.
Camp by early afternoon. Once you have dropped bags, the vehicle heads out for a couple of hours before dark. The Talek River area near camp usually has something going on, whether that is a pride resting up in the shade or elephants working through the riverine bush.
Dinner and overnight stay at Jambo Masai Mara Camp.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Out at first light with coffee before you go. Dawn is when the cats are still moving and the light is soft enough for photography. Your guide will have an idea of where lions were last seen and works the radio as other vehicles start reporting in.
Back to camp mid-morning for breakfast and a break through the hot hours. The second drive goes out around four. Late afternoon suits the plains game, with topi standing on termite mounds and big herds of zebra and wildebeest spread across open ground. Hyena become active as the light goes.
Dinner and overnight stay at Jambo Masai Mara Camp.
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
One more drive before breakfast. Guides often save a spot they have been watching for this last outing, so it is worth being up for it rather than sleeping in.
Back for breakfast, then check out and head east. Lunch on the road and you should reach Nairobi mid to late afternoon, traffic depending. Drop off at your hotel or the airport for an evening flight.
