Four areas in nine days, arranged so you are not covering the same road twice. South first to Amboseli, east to Tsavo, then a long haul northwest to Naivasha before finishing in the Mara.
Day five is the one to be honest about. It runs seven to eight hours and there is no way around it, because Tsavo and the Rift Valley sit at opposite ends of the country. Everything either side of it is a comfortable half day or less.
Accommodations:
Driving Time: 4-5 hours
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
South on the Namanga road through flat thorn country. Kilimanjaro comes into view long before the gate if the morning is clear. Lodge by lunchtime.
Afternoon drive around the swamps, which is where Amboseli's elephant spend most of their time. The water comes from meltwater off Kilimanjaro filtering underground for decades before surfacing here, which is why there is permanent green in the middle of a dust bowl.
Dinner and overnight stay at AA Lodge Amboseli.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Out at dawn while the mountain is still clear. That window closes by nine or ten most days when cloud builds around the summit.
Observation Hill is the only spot where you can get out of the vehicle and walk. Worth the short climb for the view over the swamps. The afternoon works the margins where buffalo wallow and the water birds gather, pelican, spoonbill, crowned crane, and a great many others.
Dinner and overnight stay at AA Lodge Amboseli.
Driving Time: 4-5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
East through Emali and onto the Mombasa highway. Ngutuni sits on a private sanctuary bordering Tsavo East with its own waterhole below the lodge, which stays busy through the day.
Afternoon into the park proper. Tsavo elephant look completely different from Amboseli's because they dust themselves in red laterite soil. Same species, different colour entirely.
Dinner and overnight stay at Ngutuni Safari Lodge.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Tsavo East runs to nearly 12,000 square kilometres, so you are not going to cover it. The morning heads for the Galana River where permanent water pulls everything in.
Lugard Falls is more rapids than falls but the rock formations are worth the stop, water-worn into smooth channels over a very long time. Aruba dam area in the afternoon for plains game, and the open country here is good for cheetah if you get lucky.
Dinner and overnight stay at Ngutuni Safari Lodge.
Driving Time: 7-8 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
A drive rather than a game day. Out through the park with a look around on the way, then northwest on the Mombasa road, past Nairobi and up to the escarpment.
The country changes twice on this leg, dry Tsavo scrub giving way to green highlands and then dropping into the valley. Bila Shaka by late afternoon. A quiet evening by the water is what most people want after that many hours sitting down.
Dinner and overnight stay at Bila Shaka Lodge.
Driving Time: 4-5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Boat out on the lake first thing. Hippo pods, fish eagles that will dive for a fish on cue, and pelican in numbers. An hour or so, then back for breakfast and on the road.
Southwest up over the Mau escarpment and down into Maasai land. Mara Simba sits on the Talek River. There is time for a short drive before dark once you have checked in.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Simba Lodge.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
The Talek area near the lodge holds several lion prides and they are well habituated to vehicles, so sightings tend to be relaxed rather than fleeting.
Morning for predators, afternoon for whatever presents itself. Elephant work the river margins, hippo hold the pools, and the plains behind carry zebra and wildebeest in permanent residence.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Simba Lodge.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Take lunch with you and go further today, out towards the Sand River or west towards the Mara River depending on where the reports are coming from.
From July the migration herds are in and crossings become possible. Nobody can tell you when a herd will go, only that they are gathering. Balloons need booking in advance and go at first light.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Simba Lodge.
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Early drive, breakfast, then the road home through Narok and up the escarpment.
Nairobi mid to late afternoon. Hotel or airport, whichever is needed.
