Majestic Kenya Safaris

10-Day Northern & Mara Luxury Safari

Starts from

£2,600 pp

Overview

Ten days on the northern circuit finishing with four nights in the Masai Mara. You cover Samburu for the special northern species, Ol Pejeta for rhinos, and Lake Nakuru, before heading to the Mara. Four nights at Mara Sopa Lodge gives you proper time to explore the reserve without rushing.

The northern parks each have a distinct character and the Mara at the end is the payoff. Elephant Bedroom Camp in Samburu, Sweetwaters Serena at Ol Pejeta, The Cliff above Nakuru, and Mara Sopa Lodge on the Talek River are all well positioned for game drives in their respective areas.

Accommodations:

  • Elephant Bedroom Camp (Samburu)
  • Sweetwaters Serena Camp (Ol Pejeta)
  • The Cliff Nakuru (Lake Nakuru)
  • Masai Mara Sopa Lodge (Masai Mara)

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve

    Driving Time: 5-6 hours

    Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Leave Nairobi early heading north through the highlands. Cross the equator near Nanyuki then drop into dry northern lowlands. Arrive at Elephant Bedroom Camp on the Ewaso Nyiro River in the afternoon. The late afternoon drive introduces you to Samburu's northern species. Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, and gerenuk are commonly seen on a first outing. Elephants gather along the river as the day cools.

Dinner and overnight stay at Elephant Bedroom Camp.

  • Day 2: Full Day in Samburu National Reserve

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Morning and afternoon drives. Start early along the river for predator activity and good light. The birdlife includes several northern specials not found elsewhere in Kenya. Afternoon drives regularly produce leopard sightings in the riverine woodland. Samburu has a quieter, more remote feel than the southern parks and the camps are less crowded. A good two nights in genuine northern Kenya.

Dinner and overnight stay at Elephant Bedroom Camp.

  • Day 3: Samburu to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

    Driving Time: 3-4 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Head south through Nanyuki to Ol Pejeta. Arrive at Sweetwaters Serena Camp before lunch. The afternoon drive focuses on rhinos. Ol Pejeta holds East Africa's largest black rhino population alongside healthy white rhino numbers and the sanctuary for the last two northern white rhinos. Lions, elephants, and buffalo fill the rest of the conservancy.

Dinner and overnight stay at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.

  • Day 4: Full Day in Ol Pejeta Conservancy

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Full day with morning and afternoon drives. Early morning is best for rhino activity. Your guide positions you well for both black and white rhino viewing across different habitat. Optional chimpanzee sanctuary visit in the afternoon, the only place in Kenya to see chimps. General game viewing continues across grassland, riverine forest, and bush.

Dinner and overnight stay at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.

  • Day 5: Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru National Park

    Driving Time: 2 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Short drive southwest to Lake Nakuru. Arrive at The Cliff before lunch, the lodge sitting above the park with views over the lake. The afternoon game drive covers this compact park efficiently. Nakuru holds both rhino species, Rothschild's giraffe, lions, and leopards. The lake supports pelicans, cormorants, and flamingos in varying numbers depending on water levels.

Dinner and overnight stay at The Cliff Nakuru.

  • Day 6: Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara National Reserve

    Driving Time: 5-6 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Drive west across the Mau Escarpment into Maasai country. Arrive at Masai Mara Sopa Lodge in the afternoon. After three days in the northern parks the Mara's open scale and wildlife density are immediately striking. Even arriving late there is time for an evening drive to get your first proper look at the reserve before four full days of game viewing begin.

Dinner and overnight stay at Masai Mara Sopa Lodge.

  • Day 7: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

First full day with morning and afternoon drives. Leave at dawn when predators are active. Lions are easy to find. Cheetahs work the open plains and leopards appear along the rivers. The Mara River holds hippos and large crocodiles year-round. Between July and October migration crossings happen along the river, timing never predictable but worth watching for.

Dinner and overnight stay at Masai Mara Sopa Lodge.

  • Day 8: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Second full day. Your guide adjusts the plan based on your interests. Option for a full-day drive with picnic lunch for maximum time out in the reserve. Optional dawn balloon flight if arranged in advance. The Mara is large enough that you can cover new ground each day without repeating yourself.

Dinner and overnight stay at Masai Mara Sopa Lodge.

  • Day 9: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Third full day. Four nights in the Mara lets you properly settle in and build on what you have seen. Your guide tracks specific animals and revisits productive spots. Optional Maasai village visit in the afternoon. The last evening drive closes out your time in the reserve properly before heading back to Nairobi tomorrow.

Dinner and overnight stay at Masai Mara Sopa Lodge.

  • Day 10: Masai Mara to Nairobi

    Driving Time: 5-6 hours

    Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Final morning game drive before breakfast, then check out and drive back to Nairobi. Arrive by mid to late afternoon. Drop off at your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for evening departures.
