Overview
Nine days covering Kenya’s northern circuit before finishing in the Masai Mara. You spend two nights each in Samburu and Ol Pejeta, one night at Lake Nakuru, then three nights in the Mara. It’s a thorough route that combines the best of northern and southern Kenya without rushing between stops.
The northern circuit adds real depth to a Kenya safari. Samburu’s special species, Ol Pejeta’s rhinos, and Nakuru’s concentrated wildlife all sit north of the Mara and are worth the extra time. Three nights at Governors’ Camp at the end gives you proper time to explore the Mara without feeling like you’re just passing through.
Accommodations:
- Elephant Bedroom Camp (Samburu)
- Sweetwaters Serena Camp (Ol Pejeta)
- Sarova Lion Hill Lodge (Lake Nakuru)
- Governors’ Camp (Masai Mara)
Itinerary
-
Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Leave Nairobi early heading north. Cross the equator near Nanyuki then drop into the dry northern lowlands. Arrive at Elephant Bedroom Camp in the afternoon on the bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River. The late afternoon game drive introduces you to Samburu's northern species including Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, and gerenuk. Elephants are common along the river.
Dinner and overnight stay at Elephant Bedroom Camp.
-
Day 2: Full Day in Samburu National Reserve
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning and afternoon drives in the reserve. The river is the focal point with wildlife drawn to permanent water through dry country. Start early for predator activity and good light. The birdlife is excellent with several northern specials. Leopard sightings along the riverbanks are reasonably common in the afternoon. Samburu has a quieter, more remote feel than the southern parks.
Dinner and overnight stay at Elephant Bedroom Camp.
-
Day 3: Samburu to Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Driving Time: 3-4 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Head south to Ol Pejeta through Nanyuki. Arrive at Sweetwaters Serena Camp before lunch. The afternoon drive focuses on rhinos. Ol Pejeta holds East Africa's largest black rhino population alongside white rhinos and the sanctuary for the last two northern white rhinos. Lions, elephants, and plains game fill the rest of the conservancy.
Dinner and overnight stay at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.
-
Day 4: Full Day in Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Full day with morning and afternoon drives. Early morning is best for rhino activity. Black rhinos stay in thicker bush while white rhinos tend to be more visible in open grassland. Your guide knows the conservancy well. Optional visit to the chimpanzee sanctuary in the afternoon, the only place in Kenya to see chimps. General game viewing continues across mixed habitat.
Dinner and overnight stay at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.
-
Day 5: Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru National Park
Driving Time: 2 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Short drive southwest to Lake Nakuru. Arrive at Sarova Lion Hill Lodge before lunch, the lodge positioned on a hill overlooking the park. The afternoon game drive covers this compact park efficiently. Nakuru was established as a rhino sanctuary and both black and white rhinos are regularly seen. Rothschild's giraffes, introduced successfully, are now a healthy population. Lions and leopards are present and the lake attracts good numbers of waterbirds.
Dinner and overnight stay at Sarova Lion Hill Lodge.
-
Day 6: Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara National Reserve
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Drive west across the Mau Escarpment and into Maasai country. Arrive at Governors' Camp in the afternoon with time for a short evening drive. After the enclosed parks to the north the Mara's open scale and wildlife density are immediately obvious. Lions, elephants, buffalo, and giraffe spread across the plains.
Dinner and overnight stay at Governors' Camp.
-
Day 7: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
First full day with morning and afternoon drives. Leave at dawn when predators are active. Lions are easy to find in the Mara. Cheetahs work the open plains and leopards appear along the rivers. Governors' Camp's position on the Mara River gives good access to the northern sections of the reserve where migration crossings happen between July and October.
Dinner and overnight stay at Governors' Camp.
-
Day 8: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Second full day. Your guide adjusts based on your interests. Option for a full-day drive with picnic lunch for maximum time with wildlife. Optional dawn balloon flight if arranged in advance. Optional Maasai village visit in the afternoon. The last evening drive closes out your time in the Mara before heading back to Nairobi tomorrow.
Dinner and overnight stay at Governors' Camp.
-
Day 9: Masai Mara to Nairobi
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Final morning game drive before breakfast, then check out and drive back to Nairobi. Arrive by mid to late afternoon. Drop off at your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for evening departures.
