8-Day Samburu & Mara Luxury Safari
- Visit: Samburu NR, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Masai Mara NR
- 8 Days
- Private
- Luxury

£2,300 pp
Overview
Eight days combining the north and south of Kenya in a single trip. You spend two days in Samburu, two nights at Ol Pejeta for rhinos, then head to the Mara for three nights. The route gives you a good mix of landscapes and wildlife without any stop feeling too short.
Samburu and the Mara are the two highlights. Samburu holds species you simply won’t encounter further south, making it worth the drive. The Mara rounds the trip off with high wildlife density and the best big cat viewing in Kenya. Elephant Bedroom Camp, Sweetwaters Serena, and Mara Maisha Camp are all well placed for game drives in their respective areas.
Accommodations:
- Elephant Bedroom Camp (Samburu)
- Sweetwaters Serena Camp (Ol Pejeta)
- Mara Maisha Camp (Masai Mara)
Itinerary
-
Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Leave Nairobi early heading north through the central highlands. Cross the equator near Nanyuki then drop into dry northern lowlands where the vegetation thins and the landscape changes character. Arrive at Elephant Bedroom Camp in the afternoon on the Ewaso Nyiro River.
The late afternoon drive introduces you to Samburu's northern species. Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx are all possible on a first outing. Elephants are common along the river and lions work the woodland edges. A good introduction to northern Kenya.
Dinner and overnight stay at Elephant Bedroom Camp.
-
Day 2: Full Day in Samburu National Reserve
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning and afternoon drives covering different areas of the reserve. The Ewaso Nyiro River is the main focus, drawing wildlife through dry country. Early mornings are the most productive. The birdlife is excellent with several northern specials not found elsewhere in Kenya. Leopard sightings along the river are reasonably common in the afternoon.
Samburu has a quieter feel than the southern parks. The camps are less crowded and the reserve has a more remote character. Between drives you're back at camp for lunch and a rest. A good last evening before the drive south tomorrow.
Dinner and overnight stay at Elephant Bedroom Camp.
-
Day 3: Samburu to Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Driving Time: 3-4 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Head south to Ol Pejeta through Nanyuki with Mount Kenya visible on clear days. Arrive at Sweetwaters Serena Camp before lunch. Ol Pejeta holds East Africa's largest black rhino population and a healthy white rhino population alongside cattle ranching, one of the more successful conservation models in Kenya.
The afternoon focuses on rhinos. Black rhinos are solitary and stay in thicker bush, white rhinos more visible in open grassland. There's also a sanctuary for the last two northern white rhinos. Optional chimpanzee sanctuary visit, the only place in Kenya to see chimps.
Dinner and overnight stay at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.
-
Day 4: Ol Pejeta to Masai Mara National Reserve
Driving Time: 6-7 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Long drive southwest across the Rift Valley into Maasai country. Start early with a lunch stop along the way. The landscapes change significantly during the journey. Arrive at Mara Maisha Camp in the afternoon with time for a short evening drive to get your first look at the Mara.
After Samburu's dry reserve and Ol Pejeta's enclosed conservancy the Mara's open scale is immediately impressive. Lions, elephants, buffalo, and giraffe spread across the plains. Your guide picks up radio contacts to find active sightings as soon as you're in the vehicle.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Maisha Camp.
-
Day 5: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
First full day with morning and afternoon drives. Leave at dawn when predators are active. Lions are generally easy to find. Cheetahs work the open plains and leopards appear along the rivers. The Mara River holds hippos and large crocodiles year-round. Between July and October migration crossings happen along the river though timing is never predictable.
Back to camp between drives for lunch. The afternoon continues exploring different sections of the reserve. The resident populations of wildebeest, zebra, topi, and gazelle are substantial year-round and provide consistent predator activity.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Maisha Camp.
-
Day 6: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Second full day. Your guide adjusts the plan based on what you want to see more of. Option for a full-day drive with picnic lunch for maximum time out in the reserve. Optional dawn hot air balloon flight over the plains if booked in advance. The afternoon continues with game viewing as the day cools.
Optional Maasai village visit in the afternoon gives context to the communities living alongside the wildlife. The last evening drive wraps up your time in the Mara before heading back to Nairobi tomorrow.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Maisha Camp.
-
Day 7: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Third full day in the Mara. Three nights in one camp lets you slow down and build on what you've seen over previous days. Your guide tracks specific animals across multiple outings. Morning drives remain consistently rewarding throughout the stay. The Mara rewards patience and time.
A good day to revisit favourite spots or push into areas you haven't explored yet. The Mara Triangle on the western side of the reserve is worth a full morning if you haven't been. Last evening drive before the journey home tomorrow.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Maisha Camp.
-
Day 8: Masai Mara to Nairobi
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Final morning game drive before breakfast, then check out and drive back to Nairobi. Arrive by mid to late afternoon. Drop off at your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for evening departures.
