6-Day Amboseli & Mara Luxury Safari
- Visit: Masai Mara National Reserve and Amboseli National Park
- 6 Days
- Private

£2,000 pp (USD)
Overview
Six days covering two of Kenya’s most iconic parks. You start at Amboseli with Kilimanjaro views and large elephant herds, then head to the Masai Mara for three nights of classic savanna game viewing. It’s a compact trip that fits well into a two-week holiday from the UK and covers two very different landscapes.
Amboseli is compact and photogenic with the best Kilimanjaro backdrops in Kenya. The Mara is where you find the highest wildlife density and the best big cat viewing in the country. Tortilis Camp at Amboseli and Sarova Mara Game Camp in the Mara are both well positioned for game drives.
Accommodations:
- Tortilis Camp (Amboseli)
- Sarova Mara Game Camp (Masai Mara)
Itinerary
-
Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park
Driving Time: 4-5 hours
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Leave Nairobi early heading southeast through Maasai country. The road dries out as you approach the Amboseli basin and on a clear morning Kilimanjaro appears on the horizon well before you reach the gate. Arrive at Tortilis Camp around lunchtime.
The late afternoon game drive covers the open plains and swamp areas. Amboseli has consistently good elephant viewing with large herds moving across the grassland. Lions, cheetahs, and waterbirds round out a strong first evening in the park.
Dinner and overnight stay at Tortilis Camp.
-
Day 2: Full Day in Amboseli National Park
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning and afternoon drives. Start early for the best mountain light before the clouds build over Kilimanjaro. Your guide knows the elephant families well and can often identify individuals. The park is compact so you can cover it thoroughly without spending too long between sightings.
Observation Hill gives a good view over the swamps and surrounding plains and is worth a short stop. The afternoon focuses on predators and the swamp edges where buffalo, zebra, and waterbirds concentrate. Back at camp between drives for lunch and rest.
Dinner and overnight stay at Tortilis Camp.
-
Day 3: Amboseli to Masai Mara National Reserve
Driving Time: 6-7 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Long drive day heading northwest through the Rift Valley and into Maasai country. Plan for a full day in the vehicle with an early start. The landscapes change noticeably during the journey. Arrive at Sarova Mara Game Camp in the afternoon with enough time for a short evening drive.
The Mara's wildlife density after two days in the more open Amboseli plains is immediately striking. Lions, giraffe, buffalo, and zebra are spread across the grassland in every direction. Your guide picks up radio contacts to find out what's happening across the reserve.
Dinner and overnight stay at Sarova Mara Game Camp.
-
Day 4: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
First full day with morning and afternoon drives. Leave at dawn when predators are most active. Lions are straightforward to find in the Mara. Cheetahs favour the open areas and leopards appear along rivers and woodland. The Mara River holds hippos and large crocodiles year-round.
Between July and October the wildebeest migration crossings happen along the river. Timing is unpredictable but your guide monitors herd movements and positions you well. Outside migration the resident populations of zebra, wildebeest, and gazelle are still substantial.
Dinner and overnight stay at Sarova Mara Game Camp.
-
Day 5: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Second full day in the Mara. By now your guide knows your interests and adjusts accordingly. Option for a full-day drive with picnic lunch for more time with wildlife. Optional dawn balloon flight over the plains if arranged in advance. The afternoon continues with standard game viewing as the day cools.
The last evening drive gives you a proper send-off from the Mara. This is often when guides make a point of finding something memorable before heading back to camp. Worth staying out until the last light.
Dinner and overnight stay at Sarova Mara Game Camp.
-
Day 6: Masai Mara to Nairobi
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Final morning game drive before breakfast, then check out and drive back to Nairobi. Arrive by mid to late afternoon depending on traffic. Drop off at your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for evening departures.
