Five days in the Masai Mara is the right amount of time to do it properly without rushing. You arrive on day one and have three full days of game viewing before heading back to Nairobi. It’s a focused trip that works well if you have limited time but want a serious safari experience rather than a quick overnight.
Governors’ Camp sits on the Mara River in the northern section of the reserve, one of the best locations for wildlife access and river viewing. The camp has been running for decades and the guides know the area well. Three nights there gives you enough time to settle in and explore different parts of the reserve.
Accommodation:
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Leave Nairobi early heading west through the Rift Valley and into Maasai country. The road descends from the highlands and the landscape opens into classic savanna as you near the reserve. Arrive at Governors' Camp in the afternoon in time to settle in before heading out.
Your first game drive goes out in the late afternoon. Even on day one the wildlife density in the Mara is immediately obvious. Lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffe, and zebra spread across the open plains. Your guide works radio contact with other guides to find out what's happening across the reserve.
Dinner and overnight stay at Governors' Camp.

Morning and afternoon drives. Leave at dawn when predators are most active and the light is at its best. Lions are generally easy to find in the Mara, often in large prides. Cheetahs work the open plains and leopards show up along the rivers and in woodland patches. Governors' Camp's position on the Mara River gives excellent access to the northern sections of the reserve.
Between July and October the wildebeest migration crossings happen along this stretch of river. Timing is never guaranteed but your guide monitors herd movements. Outside migration the resident wildlife is still exceptional. Back to camp between drives for lunch and a rest in the heat of the day.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Second full day with your guide adjusting based on what you want to see. You can opt for a full-day drive with a picnic lunch if you want maximum time out in the reserve. The Mara is large enough that you can cover new ground each day without repeating yourself.
Optional dawn hot air balloon flight over the plains if booked in advance. It gives a completely different perspective on the landscape and is worth doing if it fits the budget. The afternoon continues with game viewing as the day cools down before your last evening in the reserve.
Dinner and overnight stay at Governors' Camp.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Third full day. By now your guide knows your interests well and plans drives accordingly. Morning drives in the Mara are consistently good and there's always something happening. The Mara River hippo pools are worth revisiting in the afternoon when the light changes and animals gather at the water.
Optional Maasai village visit to understand how communities live alongside the wildlife here. It adds useful context to the whole trip. The last evening drive closes out your time in the Mara properly before the drive back to Nairobi tomorrow.
Dinner and overnight stay at Governors' Camp.
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Final morning game drive before breakfast, then check out and head back to Nairobi. The drive east takes most of the day and you arrive by mid to late afternoon depending on traffic.
Drop off at your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Evening departures work fine.
