Eleven days running as a single loop out of Nairobi with no backtracking. You head north to Samburu, drop south to Ol Pejeta, cross into the Rift Valley for Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha, then finish with four nights in the Masai Mara. Each leg moves you closer to the next park rather than doubling back, so the longest drive is under six hours.
The route covers a lot of variety. Samburu holds species you will not see anywhere else in Kenya. Ol Pejeta has the best rhino viewing in East Africa. Nakuru is small but productive. Naivasha gives you a quiet lake day off the vehicle. Then four nights in the Mara at the end, which is the right amount of time to do the reserve properly.
Accommodations:
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Leave Nairobi early heading north through the central highlands. You cross the equator near Nanyuki then drop into the dry northern lowlands where the vegetation thins and the colours shift to ochre and rust. Arrive at Elephant Bedroom Camp on the bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River in the afternoon.
The late afternoon drive introduces you to Samburu's northern species. Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx are all possible on a first outing. Elephants gather along the river as the day cools. It feels like a different country from the moment you start driving.
Dinner and overnight stay at Elephant Bedroom Camp.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning and afternoon drives. The Ewaso Nyiro River is the focal point, drawing wildlife through otherwise dry country. Start early for predator activity and the best light. The birdlife is excellent with several northern specials including vulturine guineafowl and Somali ostrich.
Afternoon drives regularly produce leopard sightings along the riverbanks. Lions are present and well adapted to the dry conditions. The reserve is quieter than the southern parks and the camps are less crowded. Worth taking the time here rather than rushing.
Dinner and overnight stay at Elephant Bedroom Camp.
Driving Time: 3 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning game drive, then head south to Ol Pejeta through Nanyuki with Mount Kenya visible to the east on clear days. A short drive by Kenyan standards and you arrive at Sweetwaters Serena Camp in time for lunch.
The afternoon drive focuses on rhinos. Ol Pejeta holds East Africa's largest black rhino population alongside a healthy white rhino population. There is also a sanctuary for the last two northern white rhinos on earth, worth visiting for the conservation context. Lions, elephants, and buffalo fill the rest of the conservancy.
Dinner and overnight stay at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Full day with morning and afternoon drives. Early morning is best for rhino activity before the heat builds. Black rhinos are solitary and stay in thicker bush while white rhinos are more social and visible on open grassland. Your guide knows the conservancy well and positions you for both.
Optional chimpanzee sanctuary visit in the afternoon, the only place in Kenya to see chimps. General game viewing continues across the conservancy's mixed habitat of grassland, riverine forest, and bush. The cattle ranching operation running alongside the wildlife is worth understanding as a conservation model.
Dinner and overnight stay at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.
Driving Time: 2-3 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Short drive southwest, dropping off the highlands into the Rift Valley. Arrive at The Cliff before lunch, the lodge sitting above the park with good views over the lake and surrounding woodland.
The afternoon game drive covers this compact park efficiently. Nakuru was established as a rhino sanctuary and both black and white rhinos are regularly seen. Rothschild's giraffes were introduced successfully and are now a healthy population. Lions and leopards are present. The lake attracts pelicans, cormorants, and flamingos in varying numbers depending on water levels.
Dinner and overnight stay at The Cliff Nakuru.
Driving Time: 1.5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning game drive in Nakuru before breakfast, then the shortest transfer of the trip down the valley floor to Naivasha. Arrive at Sawela Lodge around lunchtime with the whole afternoon free.
Naivasha is a freshwater lake with no predators, so the activities here are different. A boat ride gets you close to hippos and large waterbird flocks including pelicans and fish eagles. Crescent Island nearby offers walking alongside zebra, wildebeest, and giraffe without a vehicle. A useful break before the Mara.
Dinner and overnight stay at Sawela Lodge.
Driving Time: 4-5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Head southwest along the valley then climb the Mau Escarpment into Maasai country. The landscape opens into classic savanna as you near the reserve. Arrive at Ashnil Mara Camp on the Talek River in the afternoon.
Time for an evening drive to get your first look at the Mara. After a week of smaller parks and conservancies the open scale and wildlife density here are immediately obvious. Lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffe, and zebra spread across the plains in every direction.
Dinner and overnight stay at Ashnil Mara Camp.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
First full day with morning and afternoon drives. Leave at dawn when predators are most active. Lions are generally easy to find, often in large prides. Cheetahs work the open plains and leopards appear along the rivers and in woodland patches.
The Talek River near camp holds hippos and is productive for leopard sightings. Between July and October the wildebeest migration crossings happen along the Mara River, though timing is never guaranteed. Back to camp between drives for lunch and a rest.
Dinner and overnight stay at Ashnil Mara Camp.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Second full day. Your guide adjusts based on what you want to see more of. You can opt for a full-day drive with a picnic lunch if you want maximum time out in the reserve rather than returning to camp at midday.
Optional dawn hot air balloon flight over the plains if booked in advance. It gives a different perspective on the landscape and is worth doing if it fits the budget. The afternoon continues with game viewing as the day cools.
Dinner and overnight stay at Ashnil Mara Camp.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Third full day. Four nights in one camp lets you slow down and build on what you have seen across previous drives. Your guide tracks specific animals over multiple outings and knows where different prides are ranging.
Optional Maasai village visit in the afternoon to understand how communities live alongside the wildlife here. The last evening drive closes out the safari properly before the drive back to Nairobi tomorrow.
