Overview
Fourteen days running west to east across Kenya, finishing at the coast. You start with four nights in the Masai Mara, drop down to Lake Naivasha, then work south through Amboseli and both Tsavo parks before reaching Diani Beach. The route follows a natural line across the country rather than doubling back, so the driving days stay manageable.
Starting in the Mara means you get the best game viewing while you are fresh. Naivasha breaks the journey with a quiet lake day. Amboseli brings Kilimanjaro and elephants, then Tsavo West and East cover the big wilderness areas on the way to the coast. Two nights at Diani at the end give you time to rest before flying home.
Accommodations:
- Mara Maisha Camp (Masai Mara)
- Sawela Lodge (Lake Naivasha)
- Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge (Amboseli)
- Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge (Tsavo West)
- Ashnil Aruba Lodge (Tsavo East)
- The Sands at Nomad (Diani Beach)
Itinerary
-
Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Leave Nairobi early heading west through the Rift Valley and into Maasai country. The road descends from the highlands and the landscape opens into savanna as you near the reserve. Arrive at Mara Maisha Camp in the afternoon.
Your first game drive goes out in the late afternoon. Even on day one the wildlife density is obvious. Lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffe, and zebra spread across the open plains. Your guide works radio contact with other guides to find out what is happening across the reserve.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Maisha Camp.
-
Day 2: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning and afternoon drives. Leave at dawn when predators are most active and the light is good. Lions are generally easy to find in the Mara, often in large prides. Cheetahs work the open plains and leopards show up along the rivers and in woodland patches.
The Mara River holds hippos and large crocodiles year-round. Between July and October the wildebeest migration crossings happen along the river, though timing is never guaranteed. Back to camp between drives for lunch and a rest in the heat of the day.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Maisha Camp.
-
Day 3: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Second full day with your guide adjusting based on what you want to see. You can opt for a full-day drive with a picnic lunch if you want maximum time out in the reserve. The Mara is large enough that you can cover new ground each day without repeating yourself.
Optional dawn hot air balloon flight over the plains if booked in advance. It gives a different perspective on the landscape and is worth doing if it fits the budget. The afternoon continues with game viewing as the day cools.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Maisha Camp.
-
Day 4: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Third full day. Four nights in one camp lets you slow down and build on what you have seen over previous drives. Your guide tracks specific animals across multiple outings and knows where different prides and individuals are ranging.
Optional Maasai village visit in the afternoon to understand how communities live alongside the wildlife here. The last evening drive closes out your time in the Mara before heading east tomorrow.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Maisha Camp.
-
Day 5: Masai Mara to Lake Naivasha
Driving Time: 4-5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast head northeast out of Maasai country and climb back into the Rift Valley. Lake Naivasha sits at higher elevation surrounded by flower farms and ranches. Arrive at Sawela Lodge around lunchtime.
Naivasha is a freshwater lake with no predators, a change of pace after four days of game drives. A boat ride in the afternoon gets you close to hippos and large waterbird flocks including pelicans and fish eagles. Crescent Island nearby offers walking alongside zebra, wildebeest, and giraffe without vehicles.
Dinner and overnight stay at Sawela Lodge.
-
Day 6: Lake Naivasha to Amboseli National Park
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Long drive south skirting Nairobi then out through Maasai country toward the Amboseli basin. The road dries out as you go and on a clear afternoon Kilimanjaro appears ahead well before you reach the gate. Arrive at Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge in the afternoon.
Time for a short evening drive on the open plains. Amboseli has reliable elephant viewing with large herds moving across the grassland. The swamps attract hippos and good numbers of waterbirds. A different landscape entirely from the Mara.
Dinner and overnight stay at Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge.
-
Day 7: Full Day in Amboseli National Park
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning and afternoon drives. Start early for the best light on Kilimanjaro before the clouds build. Your guide knows the elephant families well and can often identify individuals by tusk shape and ear markings. The park is compact so you cover it thoroughly without long drives between sightings.
Observation Hill is worth a short stop for the view over the swamps and surrounding plains. The afternoon focuses on predators and the swamp edges where buffalo, zebra, and waterbirds concentrate around the water.
Dinner and overnight stay at Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge.
-
Day 8: Amboseli to Tsavo West National Park
Driving Time: 2-3 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Short drive northeast through dry scrubland to Tsavo West. Arrive at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge before lunch, the lodge sitting above a waterhole that stays busy with animals throughout the day. Worth watching from the terrace between drives.
The afternoon drive takes in Mzima Springs, clear pools fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro where hippos and crocodiles live year-round. The elephants in Tsavo are stained deep red by the iron-rich soil, a noticeable contrast from Amboseli's grey animals.
Dinner and overnight stay at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge.
-
Day 9: Full Day in Tsavo West National Park
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning and afternoon drives through varied terrain of volcanic hills, lava flows, and thick bush. The park holds lions, leopards, cheetahs, and reintroduced rhinos, though the dense vegetation makes sightings less predictable than open savanna. Patience and a good guide help here.
Buffalo herds are large and the birdlife is excellent. Afternoons at the lodge bring steady elephant traffic to the waterhole with good light in the last hour before sunset.
Dinner and overnight stay at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge.
-
Day 10: Tsavo West to Tsavo East National Park
Driving Time: 3-4 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Cross into Tsavo East after breakfast, game viewing along the way. The terrain opens from rocky volcanic country to flat bushland and open savanna. Arrive at Ashnil Aruba Lodge along the Voi River where animals come to drink throughout the day.
The afternoon drive covers the river area and nearby plains. Elephant herds here are large and all stained red by the laterite soil. Lions are common and easier to spot in the open terrain than in Tsavo West. Buffalo can appear in huge numbers.
Dinner and overnight stay at Ashnil Aruba Lodge.
-
Day 11: Full Day in Tsavo East National Park
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning and afternoon drives across Kenya's largest park. Head early to the Galana River where predators and large herds concentrate at permanent water. Lugard Falls is worth a stop for the rock formations where the river cuts through solid stone with crocodiles in the pools below.
The afternoon covers open plains where cheetahs, gerenuk, and ostriches are regularly seen. The park has a remote feel and you can go long stretches without other vehicles in quieter months. Unhurried game viewing before the coast tomorrow.
Dinner and overnight stay at Ashnil Aruba Lodge.
-
Day 12: Tsavo East to Diani Beach
Driving Time: 4-5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning game drive on the way out of the park, then head southeast toward the coast. The road drops through dry country before the air changes and the vegetation turns green as you near Mombasa. Cross the Likoni ferry to the south coast and continue to Diani.
Arrive at The Sands at Nomad in the afternoon. The Indian Ocean is right in front of you and the pace shifts immediately after eleven days of early mornings. The rest of the day is yours to settle in.
Dinner and overnight stay at The Sands at Nomad.
-
Day 13: Full Day at Diani Beach
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
A full day at the beach. Swim, snorkel, or simply rest. Diani has one of the better stretches of beach on the East African coast with white sand and warm clear water. The reef is worth snorkelling if conditions are right.
Optional day trip to Shimba Hills for elephants and sable antelope, or a dhow excursion along the coast. Both need advance arrangement. Otherwise this is a proper rest day after the drive down from the parks.
Dinner and overnight stay at The Sands at Nomad.
-
Day 14: Diani Beach to Nairobi
Flight: Diani to Wilson Airport, Nairobi
Meals: Breakfast
Final breakfast at the beach then transfer to Ukunda airstrip for the flight back to Wilson Airport in Nairobi. The flight takes about an hour and saves you the long drive back.
Arrive in Nairobi by mid-morning and connect to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for international departures.
