6-Day Masai Mara & Lake Nakuru Safari
- Visit: Masai Mara NR, Lake Nakuru NP
- 6 Days
- Private
- Mid-Range

£1000 pp
Overview
Most Kenya trips give Nakuru an afternoon and move on. Two nights lets you actually work the park, which is worth doing because it holds both black and white rhino in a small enough area that you have a real chance with each.
Three nights in the Mara first, then north into the Rift Valley. Mara Chui sits close to the reserve boundary. Lake Nakuru Lodge is inside the park itself, so you are not queuing at the gate every morning.
Accommodations:
- Mara Chui Resort (Masai Mara)
- Lake Nakuru Lodge (Lake Nakuru)
Itinerary
-
Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Out of Nairobi early, up to the escarpment, and down into the valley. There is a viewpoint on the descent where the curio sellers set up and you can see across to the Mount Longonot crater. Through Narok and on to the reserve.
Lunch at Mara Chui, then out for the afternoon. First drives are usually about the plains game, huge numbers of zebra, wildebeest, topi, and Thomson's gazelle. The cats come later once you have your bearings.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Chui Resort.
-
Day 2: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Dawn start. Lion are the easiest of the big cats to find here and the Mara holds one of the densest populations anywhere in Africa. Prides of fifteen or twenty are not unusual and cubs are around most of the year.
Back for lunch through the heat. The afternoon works the riverine woodland where leopard rest up during the day. Elephant come through these areas too, stripping bark and pushing over saplings.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Chui Resort.
-
Day 3: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Option of a full day out with a packed lunch. If you take it, the drive can push west towards the Mara River and the Mara Triangle, which is quieter and better for cheetah on the open short grass.
From July the wildebeest are here in numbers and the river crossings become possible. They gather on the bank sometimes for hours, then something triggers them and the whole herd goes at once. Nobody can predict it, so it is worth being patient if a herd is building.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Chui Resort.
-
Day 4: Masai Mara to Lake Nakuru National Park
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Early drive, breakfast, then north. The road goes back through Narok before turning up the valley towards Nakuru town. It is a long enough day that you will want the lunch stop.
Into the park by mid-afternoon. Because the lodge is inside, the drive in doubles as your first game drive. White rhino graze the open grassland near the lake and are usually visible from the road.
Dinner and overnight stay at Lake Nakuru Lodge.
-
Day 5: Full Day in Lake Nakuru National Park
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Nakuru is compact, roughly 188 square kilometres, which means you can cover most of it properly in a day. Morning along the lake edge for rhino and the Rothschild's giraffe that were brought in during the 1970s and have done well since.
The eastern side climbs into euphorbia forest and rocky cliffs, completely different country from the lake shore. Baboon Cliff looks back over the whole basin. Lion are here and leopard turn up in the acacia along the river courses. Flamingo numbers rise and fall with the water level, so some years the lake is pink and other years it is not.
Dinner and overnight stay at Lake Nakuru Lodge.
-
Day 6: Lake Nakuru to Nairobi
Driving Time: 3 hours
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
A last loop through the park on the way to the gate, then southeast towards Nairobi. The road climbs out of the valley with the escarpment falling away behind you.
You are back in the city by early afternoon, which leaves time for the Giraffe Centre or the Karen Blixen house if anyone wants it. Otherwise straight to your hotel or the airport.
