Overview
Seven days covering northern Kenya and the Masai Mara in a logical route. You spend two nights in Samburu tracking the special northern species, move to Ol Pejeta for rhinos, then finish with two nights in the Mara. It’s a compact circuit that gives you a genuine cross-section of Kenya’s wildlife without too many long drives.
The combination works well because each stop is different. Samburu’s dry northern reserve holds species you won’t see further south. Ol Pejeta adds rhino viewing in a well-managed conservancy. The Mara brings the classic open grassland experience. Staying at Elephant Bedroom Camp, Sweetwaters Serena, and Governors’ Camp puts you in good locations throughout.
Accommodations:
- Elephant Bedroom Camp (Samburu)
- Sweetwaters Serena Camp (Ol Pejeta)
- Governors’ Camp (Masai Mara)
Itinerary
-
Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Leave Nairobi early heading north through the highlands. You cross the equator near Nanyuki then drop into dry northern lowlands. The vegetation thins and the colours shift to ochre and rust. Arrive at Elephant Bedroom Camp in the afternoon, the camp sitting on the bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River.
The late afternoon drive introduces you to Samburu's northern species. Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, and gerenuk are commonly seen on a first outing. Elephants move along the river in the evening. It feels like a different part of Africa from the moment you start driving.
Dinner and overnight stay at Elephant Bedroom Camp.
-
Day 2: Full Day in Samburu National Reserve
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning and afternoon drives in the reserve. The river is the focal point, drawing wildlife through otherwise dry country. Early mornings are productive with good predator activity and cooler temperatures. The birdlife is exceptional with vulturine guineafowl, Somali ostrich, and several raptors found only in northern Kenya.
Afternoon drives often produce leopard sightings along the riverbanks. Lions are present and well adapted to the dry conditions here. The reserve is quieter than the southern parks with a more remote feel. Back at camp between drives for lunch and rest.
Dinner and overnight stay at Elephant Bedroom Camp.
-
Day 3: Samburu to Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Driving Time: 3-4 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Head south to Ol Pejeta through Nanyuki with Mount Kenya visible to the east on clear days. Arrive at Sweetwaters Serena Camp before lunch. Ol Pejeta combines wildlife conservation with cattle ranching and holds East Africa's largest black rhino population alongside healthy white rhino numbers.
The afternoon drive focuses on rhinos. Your guide knows where the different animals tend to be and positions you well for viewing. There's also a sanctuary for the last two northern white rhinos on earth, worth a visit for the conservation context alone. Lions and elephants fill the rest of the conservancy.
Dinner and overnight stay at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.
-
Day 4: Ol Pejeta to Masai Mara National Reserve
Driving Time: 6-7 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Long drive day heading southwest across the Rift Valley into Maasai country. Start early and plan for a lunch stop along the way. The landscapes change several times during the journey. Arrive at Governors' Camp in the afternoon on the bank of the Mara River.
Even arriving late there's time for a short evening drive. After Ol Pejeta's enclosed conservancy the Mara's open scale and wildlife density hit you immediately. Lions, elephants, buffalo, and giraffe are spread across the plains in every direction.
Dinner and overnight stay at Governors' Camp.
-
Day 5: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning and afternoon drives. Leave at dawn for active predators and good light. Lions are easy to find in the Mara. Cheetahs work the open plains and leopards appear along the rivers. Governors' Camp's location gives direct access to some of the best game viewing areas in the northern Mara.
The Mara River holds hippos and large crocodiles year-round. Between July and October migration crossings happen along this stretch of river. Timing is never predictable but your guide stays in contact with other guides across the reserve. Back to camp between drives for lunch.
Dinner and overnight stay at Governors' Camp.
-
Day 6: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Second full day in the Mara. Your guide adjusts the plan based on what you want more of. Option for a full-day drive with picnic lunch for maximum time with wildlife. Optional dawn balloon flight if arranged in advance. The last evening drive closes out your Mara time properly.
Optional Maasai village visit in the afternoon gives useful context to the people living alongside the wildlife. It's worth building in if you have an interest in the cultural side of the Mara ecosystem.
Dinner and overnight stay at Governors' Camp.
-
Day 7: Masai Mara to Nairobi
Driving Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Final morning game drive before breakfast, then check out and drive back to Nairobi. Arrive by mid to late afternoon. Drop off at your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for evening departures.
